Perrotta’s novel, upon which the 1999 Reese Witherspoon/Matthew Broderick film was based, finally receives an audio production. Briskly efficient Tracy is a ruthless student who will do just about anything to win the election for class president. Good guy football star Paul is encouraged to run by faculty adviser Jim McAllister, aka “Mr. M.,” who cannot abide Tracy and is desperate to stop her from being elected. Paul’s younger sister, Tammy, runs an irreverent campaign that builds momentum due to its sheer eccentricity. The full cast includes narrators Santino Fontana, Midori Francis, Dioni Michelle Collins, Andre Bellido, Sura Siu, and Chris Ciulla. In short chapters, the students recount their versions of the election and reveal details about themselves in the process: Tracy involves a teacher in an affair that ruins him, Tammy struggles with her sexuality, and Mr. M. has marital issues.
VERDICT This sharp satire about lost people is utterly satisfying and wry. Expect interest from listeners after the recent release of Perrotta’s follow-up, Tracy Flick Can’t Win.
