In this memoir, Wade recounts the journey from his challenging childhood in Chicago to the superstar status he achieved while playing college and professional basketball. (In 2019 the 13-time NBA All-Star retired after 16 years, most with the Miami Heat.) He also delves into his business success and the importance of family (focusing on his wife, actress Gabrielle Union, and the five children they’re raising). The writing is personal and full of admonitions (largely consisting of familiar sports clichés) for those who would follow his example. While Wade’s book also discusses coaches, trainers, and important friends, it would be incorrect to label it as just an autobiography. (Those seeking more autobiographical detail should see Wade’s 2014 book A Father First.) Easily the most important feature of this volume is the nearly 200 previously unseen full-color photographs of some of the greatest moments from Wade’s basketball career and family life, all taken by Bob Metelus, who has documented Wade’s career and life for over a decade.
VERDICT Fans of Wade and the NBA will be thrilled by this collection and can spend hours browsing the pictures. This coffee table–style book is especially recommended for school and public libraries where basketball is popular.
