Coauthors Kimberly Belle, Layne Fargo, Cate Holahan, and Lillie are back with a sequel to their
Young Rich Widows, in which four women were widowed when their mafia-affiliated husbands died in a plane crash. Four years later, the widows—Krystle, Justine, Meredith, and Camille—are targets. When the mayor of Providence, RI, dies from poisoning in Meredith’s strip club, all evidence points to her as the culprit, but there’s more going on than meets the eye. While the ladies have made under-the-table deals with the mayor’s ex-wife and his new wife to find the killer, the two women are also battling politically over differing progressive visions for the city of Providence. As time ticks down to Meredith’s trial, the ladies find themselves in a deadly race with plenty of twists and double-crossings to rival their big hair, big shoulder pads, and big attitudes.
VERDICT An ’80s-homage noir that readers of gritty mysteries will enjoy. Each character is written by a different author, but the styles blend seamlessly so that it feels like the work of one person. Although most audiences will want to read the installments in order, this fun, enjoyable sequel can also be read as a stand-alone.
