For readers who enjoy cross-stitching and want to gift a handmade creation to a recent or upcoming graduate, or maybe to a favorite teacher or professor, this is a nice collection of ideas for the perfect gift. Crafter Johanson (Stitch Love) starts this excellent guide with cross-stitch basics. With the help of close-up step-by-step photos, the book teaches readers how to best plan their designs and stitch on different types of cloth. Each pattern includes a photo of the completed piece, instructions, and a color grid. What really adds to the otherwise straightforwardness of the book are the additional patterns included for borders that can be used not only for the shown pieces but also for future projects as well. Several alphabet fonts and numbers round out the projects.
VERDICT A nice collection of information and patterns, but the niche subject matter of the designs doesn’t make this book an essential item for craft collections.
