In 1936 on the French Riviera, dreamy 19-year-old Ondine feels trapped as unpaid help in her family's small-town café. A mysterious patron requests daily delivery of lunch, a responsibility that falls to Ondine. The patron, Pablo Picasso, wants to remain isolated as he struggles with his personal life and his art. Their lives intersect for a brief time, but their interactions have a lasting impact on Ondine. In 2014, Celine learns of her grandmother's brush with fame and begins a desperate search for the rumored treasure given to her by the great artist as the lush narrative weaves between past and present. Narrator Mozhan Marno ably performs a full cast of female and male characters, including the particular challenge of two characters who age throughout the book.
VERDICT Highly recommended.
