Mina offers a second installment in the “Anna and Fin” mystery series (following Conviction). True-crime podcasters Anna McDonald and Fin Cohen investigate and solve difficult mysteries. They get a desperate email from Lisa Lee, an urbex (people who explore derelict buildings), who records her adventures on YouTube. Lisa discovered a priceless casket that purportedly contains answers as old as Christendom about Christ. Anna and Fin discover she’s disappeared and are anxious to find her. Their relationship is entrancing, since they have very opposite styles and levels of confidence. Narrator Rona Morison skillfully conveys Lisa’s naïveté and enthusiasm, while co-narrator Jonathan Keeble intensely portrays ruthless Bram Van Wyk, a South African who will do anything to get his hands on the treasure. Both narrators enliven the sometimes-confusing text, helping listeners to sort out the many accents and personalities, and snappily depicting the riveting auction that garners the world’s attention.
VERDICT This fast-moving but somewhat disjointed story is enhanced in audio with engaging performances by Morison and Keeble. Recommend to fans of Will Ferguson’s The Finder or Todd Robert Petersen’s Picnic in the Ruins.
