This is the ninth book in the multi-author romantic suspense series “The Coltons of Colorado,” after
Colton’s Baby Motive by Lara Lacombe. Odd man out in his large family, Gavin Colton left his hometown at 18, never planning to return. Now a famous true crime podcaster, he’s back to try and deal with his father’s crimes in the only way he knows how—with a new podcast season—if only his nosy family would let him. He’s distracted from his mission by Jacqui Reyes, a wildlife biologist who is looking into a possible theft of wild mustangs. Combining forces could help both of their careers, but it also puts them in serious danger. Soon they can’t stay away, either from the mystery or from each other. Readers hoping for some movement on the overarching mystery of the series may be disappointed in this one. Gavin and Jacqui’s story is essentially a stand-alone, and Gavin only interacts with the rest of his family somewhat reluctantly.
VERDICT Overall, the romance and the suspense are rather tepid, making this an unobjectionable but also uninspiring read.
