During the COVID shutdowns, filmmaker Feig (Bridesmaids) produced a daily Instagram video series entitled Quarantine Cocktail Time. It celebrated cocktail culture, offered recipes, how-to’s, and a much-needed dose of humor and lightheartedness. He has now penned this charming and witty guide to both popular and lesser-known tipples, featuring recipes, personal stories and reminiscences, and guidance on mixing the perfect drink. The thread that runs through the collection is that “every drink should be special.” Following information about how to stock a home bar and how to host a cocktail party, Feig launches into the recipes he featured in the 100 episodes of his series. Each recipe includes measurements and preparation and serving instructions, and many feature beautifully staged photographs. Recipes range from standards like Negronis, Manhattans, margaritas, and mojitos to retro drinks such as the Singapore Sling, Harvey Wallbanger, and Hot Pants! (which Feig describes as “an assault on the senses”). The initial hundred recipes are followed by a number of Feig’s original creations, as well as cocktail recipes from his celebrity friends.
VERDICT Feig’s charm and humor elevate this book above the typical how-to-make-cocktails guide. Highly recommended for public library collections.
