When the bones of a long-forgotten Cavanaugh cousin are found in a mass grave at a New York City construction site, Cassandra Cavanaugh is one of two detectives sent to NYC to assist in the investigation of his death and to bring their relative home. NYPD detective Danny Doyle isn’t sure he needs any outside help, however, especially from such an attractive and distracting source. But the detectives will need to put their personal issues aside and solve the case before the killer of the Cavanaugh cousin gets too close for comfort.
VERDICT Little detective work takes place on the page here, and the tactics employed by these detectives when they are working are likely to make true-crime aficionados cringe. Only those who are determined to read every book in this long-running series from Ferrarella (whose most recent entry was Cavanaugh Justice: Up Close and Deadly) are liable to get any real satisfaction from finishing this latest installment.
