Nora Clanton returns to her hometown of Rabbittown, AL, to take over the family casket business after the recent deaths of her parents. While there, she finds herself falling for Garrett Bishop, a complete stranger who knocks on her door one night while lost. At first, Garrett seems like the perfect guy. He has a good job working as a logistics coordinator, although, if she’s honest, she isn’t entirely sure what that means. However, Nora starts to get suspicious when Garrett is seen at the scenes of the deaths of several local residents. Eventually, Garrett’s secret identity as an agent for Death is unveiled, and this leads to some uncomfortable conversations about whether Nora can trust him and whether they will be able to make a real relationship work. Voice actors Sean Patrick Hopkins and Bailey Carr offer top-notch performances, employing solid Southern accents to bring the characters to life. The narrators balance the book’s emotional heft with the ups and downs of the characters’ growing intimacy.
VERDICT Evans’s bittersweet paranormal romance debut is highly recommended for those seeking a warmhearted contemporary romance with an unusual premise. Fans of Ashley Poston’s The Dead Romantics will want to check this out.
