Far from the hubbub of New York City in a suburb of Seattle, Dr. Teagan Ransom lives a quiet life, continuing her work on Eva Cross’s new skin-care line. The former cosmetic surgeon and reality TV doctor is hiding herself away with a few close friends and online shopping as she heals from a past trauma. Disruption to Teagan’s careful world comes in the form of the brooding and bereaved Garret Frost, who falls for her healing nature and strength. Their instant chemistry and undeniable connection is brought to a head when their pasts converge to remind the couple that a second opportunity at love is worth everything.
VERDICT Fans of Day’s “Crossfire” series will relish this subtle and emotional companion piece and its unflinching look at depression and loss. However, the novella’s abrupt twist of an ending and point-of-view shift feels a little out of left field and might leave some readers wishing that this story could have been fleshed out more in a full-length novel.
