Wetsel’s debut mystery introduces listeners to private investigator Victoria “Tori” Swenson, who embarks on a fraught investigation of her estranged family as she battles her own spiraling substance-use disorder. Tori believes that not only did her uncle and cousins steal her father’s successful barbeque business, but they are also responsible for his murder. Her investigation kicks off with the suspicious death of a cook at one of the restaurants managed by Tori’s disreputable uncle Charlie. This tragedy also gives Tori a chance to ruin Charlie’s business and reclaim what she believes is her birthright. The story unfolds from Tori’s perspective, revealing her determined pursuit of justice—or perhaps revenge—combined with the grinding weight of her addiction relapse, during which Tori deceives herself and those around her. Alyssa Appleton narrates, capturing Tori’s struggle with sobriety with nuance and sensitivity. Appleton delights with her excellent depiction of Kansas City’s lively atmosphere and convivial barbeque scene.
