Hollywood superstar Reeves teams with Kindt (Crimson Flower) and Garney (Juggernaut: No Stopping Now) for this best-selling action extravaganza. After 80 thousand years of participating in vicious combat all around the globe, B. makes a deal with a shadowy government agency—he’ll allow them to study his unique physiology if they promise to find a way to finally kill him. After an opening chapter establishing B.’s modern-day circumstances, the story flashes back to recount his upbringing. Conceived after his mother prays for the gods to send a warrior who can defend her tribe, and born just a few months later, B. has a special ability to recover from any wound, incredible strength, and particular combat prowess, which together prove effective deterrents against invaders. Unfortunately, his father isn’t satisfied with merely hunting and gathering, and pushes B. into a long, arduous, and ultimately tragic campaign of bloody conquest.
VERDICT Garney renders action sequences with frenetic energy while Reeves and Kindt’s script explores the psychological and spiritual toll of combat with real depth. More than just another gorefest, the four issues collected here form the beginning of what promises to be a fascinating character study of a traumatized warrior searching for peace of mind.
