This anthology of body horror by women and nonbinary writers succeeds wonderfully in providing exciting points of view that sometimes are overlooked. The anthology has thoughtfully added trigger warnings for each story so that readers can judge before reading whether they can or cannot stomach the contents of the individual pieces. Subjects include gastric bypass surgery gone wrong (Caitlin Marceau’s “Gastric”), infertility (“First Harvest” by April Yates), and multiple stories about pregnancy. These viewpoints are too rarely highlighted in body horror works and provide fierce and visceral avenues of exploration. Ward has assembled a strong collection, and the excellent cover designed by Claire Saag strengthens the book’s appeal.
VERDICT An important addition to any horror collection but especially for libraries looking to diversify. Recommend to readers of Ellen Datlow’s collection Body Shocks, and Trigger Warning: Body Horror edited by Desiree Baltisberger.
