Self-taught artist and first-time author Shaan offers aspiring watercolor painters a resource for practicing their skills without worrying about underlying drawings. The 20 projects in the book feature Shaan’s line art of fantastical butterflies and real flowers, all printed on watercolor paper and ready for readers’ practice brushstrokes. Templates for each design may be printed for additional practice, and video tutorials for some projects can be accessed via QR codes. Shaan provides simple explanations of watercolor techniques including the creation of particular line shapes, the blending of colors, the application of paint, and color theory, with helpful descriptions of color temperature and value. Shaan also includes information about the anatomy of butterflies and flowers, with labeled diagrams. For each project, the author specifies the colors and brush shape and size to use and also supplies guidelines for mixing colors.
VERDICT The book’s purpose, to encourage painting practice by providing pre-drawn images on watercolor paper, makes this a perhaps impractical acquisition for libraries. Nonetheless, the work succeeds in its aim to encourage practice: the projects are simple enough to support the success of beginner artists and inspire further efforts.
