Ryan’s third “Monster Hunter” book (following
Death in the Dark Woods) sees cryptozoologist Morgan Carter called to the site of a mysterious and brutal murder in Rhinelander, WI. Andy Bosworth has been charged with killing Brandon Kluver in the woods of Wisconsin, but Andy swears that Brandon was actually killed by a tusked reptilian beast called a hodag. Morgan is deeply skeptical, since, years ago, the people who first drew attention to the creature later confessed that their claims were entirely fictitious. Since then, the people of Rhinelander adopted the hodag as their mascot, promoting it as a gentle and friendly mythical creature; they are not pleased with Morgan’s contention that it could be a blood-thirsty real-life killer. Narrator Susan Bennett offers an enthusiastic reading of Ryan’s paranormal mystery, taking listeners through the ins and outs of this peculiar investigation. Listeners will be entertained as Morgan uncovers secrets and nefarious illegal activities, all while accompanied by her loyal rescue dog.
VERDICT This third entry in Ryan’s engaging mystery series does not disappoint. Recommended for fans of J.J. Dupuis’s “Creature X” novels or those seeking a cozy mystery with creepy creatures.
