The Witch Sphere is in turmoil, as New York City witches are giving birth to more typics (non-witches) than sorceresses. Nadia Knox is part of an ancient line of influential occultists, a witch-scientist in her own right. She is determined to get to the bottom of the baby phenomenon by tracking spellcasting spikes among Manhattan’s elite and working women. Meanwhile, three twentysomethings—Maya, Gabbie, and Delali—meet at an NYC bar, and by night’s end, they inadvertently make a little magic happen at Thompson Park. Though all three are up-and-coming Black creatives, their big-city aspirations take a backseat to pursuing their newfound craft when a mysterious mentor helps them hone their spellcasting powers. Narrator Imani Jade Powers offers quirky, youthful voices for the principal characters, capturing their energy and tendency toward self-absorption. While listeners may wish for more backstory about the witches’ world, timely discussions of women’s fertility and creativity is a compelling listen.
VERDICT Akumiah’s witchy fantasy debut introduces an intricate and intriguing world. Engaging characters and a cliffhanger ending will have listeners eager for more.
