John Colby is a man literally haunted by the ghosts of his past. The cursed town of Spears Corner itself provides the makings of an evil foe that John must face in order to come to grips with his decisions as a youth and his mistakes as a man. Fallible and relatable, John must overcome his fear as he faces off against an evil force far worse than he could ever imagine. An excellently assembled cast of characters rounds out this well-told horror story. Rolfe’s homage to early Stephen King is a thrill to read, with references to the horror legend peppering the novel. While there is not much gore, there are references to horrible depravity “off screen” that will make even long-time horror readers squirm. The incredible cover art also adds to the book and fits well with the novel’s themes.
VERDICT This creepy-crawly feast for the senses is a must for any fans of King and would be a particularly great read-alike suggestion for IT, Insomnia, or Dreamcatcher.
