A powerful and at times heartbreaking follow-up to Daré’s debut, The Girl with the Louding Voice. Listeners continue following Adunni, a 14-year-old girl from a small Lagos village who ran away and is staying with Tia, a kind woman who vowed to help her enroll in school. Adunni dreams of getting an education and not being forced to marry, but a knock at the door one night sees her being dragged back to her village to face trial for her supposed crimes, turning both her and Tia’s lives upside down. While the teen finds unexpected friendship with the other girls awaiting judgment, Tia is on a quest to discover the secret her mother has been keeping from her for years. Together, the women will use their voices to save themselves and make life a little bit better in their rural village of Ikati. Adjoa Andoh’s excellent narration makes each woman’s story authentically and distinctly her own and features various dialects of Nigeria.
