In this fifth installment of the multi-author “Texas Cattleman’s Club: Fathers and Sons” series (after Jules Bennett’s
From Feuding to Falling), Maynard (
The Maid’s Daughter) follows Texan ex-couple Cammie and Drake, who have recently broken up due to incompatibility over the issue of children. Cammie wants children but Drake, who spent much of his twenties caring for his orphaned stepsister, does not. Now they reunite after finding an abandoned baby. Cammie wants to care for the child but needs Drake’s status as a foster parent to do so. Though the connection between Cammie and Drake is well drawn by Maynard, some readers will be put off by the unrealistic depiction of foster care. Some late plot developments strain credulity and rush to a conclusion that doesn’t feel entirely earned.
VERDICT More of a happy-for-now than a happily-ever-after, the book concludes with major plot points still unresolved.
