A vibrant surf culture thrives in Africa, spanning Morocco in the north, down the At lantic coastal nations including Sierra Leone, Nigeria, and South Africa and up the Indian Ocean shores of Mozambique and Somalia. Compiled by Cape Town surf company Mami Wata, this title is a fun browse, with color and black-and-white photos of local surf ers, dynamic page layouts, drawings, and a grab bag of font styles. But it also has a serious side, with surfers telling in their own words what the sport means to them—many introduced to it by organizations like Waves for Change or Surfers Not Street Children as a way to escape crime or drugs in their communities. There are discussions of the history of surfing in Africa, of African surfers in international competitions, and of local entrepreneurs opening surf schools to teach locals and promote Africa as destination.
