African Americans have a high incidence of cardiovascular disease, diabetes, and cancer, caused both by genetics and environment. Walker, a graduate of Albert Einstein Medical School, examines reasons for the increased incidence of these diseases in the African American community and offers a program for preventing and possibly eliminating them. Some of this information is not new—health, diet, weight loss when necessary, and exercise. What is new is Walker's unique approach in the role of vitamin D3. Since African Americans have more melanin in their skin and spend less time in the sun, they are deficient in vitamin D3. Walker recommends taking this vitamin along with other supplements, getting enough sleep, not smoking, and not consuming alcohol in excess to prevent disease and improve health.
VERDICT There are other available books, such as Marcellus A. Walker and Kenneth B. Singleton's Natural Health for African Americans and Michelle A. Gourdine's Reclaiming Our Health. Neither of these, however, focuses on vitamin D3. Walker provides good, commonsense advice for African Americans concerned about their health.
