Attenberg (All This Could Be Yours) offers a moving and often heartbreaking intergenerational story centered on the Cohen women, a Jewish American family living in the Chicago suburbs in the 1970s. Holocaust survivor Rudy Cohen, who is gay but not out, makes a life for himself in the U.S. and is content being a husband and father, until his tragic death has lasting effects on those he leaves behind. Following each of the surviving Cohens—sisters Nancy and Shelley, mother Frieda, and Nancy’s daughter Jess—over the 40 years after Rudy’s death, Attenberg tackles complicated mother-daughter relationships, alcohol addiction, psychological trauma, coming-out journeys, and much more. Considering the large cast of characters, this audiobook may have benefited from more than one narrator. Even so, experienced voice actor Stacey Glemboski commendably voices each of the Cohen women in a way that makes them stand out and allows readers to easily track when the perspectives change.
