Course Description 

Manga has exploded in popularity across the U.S. over the past several years. More and more young people are looking for new manga titles in their libraries, and manga is proving to be an exciting opportunity to get young people engaged in libraries and classrooms. The problem is that many teachers and librarians don’t know how to incorporate manga into their programs and curricula. This crash course is here to help.

In this 2-hour crash course, you will learn how to use manga effectively in your library or classroom to increase student engagement. You will leave with tips on how to read, analyze, and teach manga, as well as ideas for manga-based programs and activities. 

The live sessions run on Thursday, May 25, 2023 from approximately 3:30-5:30 pm ET (recorded for on-demand viewing). Don’t miss this opportunity!

After you attend this interactive online course and workshop, you’ll be able to:

• Evaluate Manga for age appropriateness

• Assess inclusiveness and diverse representation in Manga titles

• Create programs that feature Manga for your library

Who should take this course 

Any librarian or educator who wants to innovate their programs and curricula to include manga. This course will be particularly good for educators, school librarians, and children’s and youth services librarians.

Jilian Rudes 

Jillian Rudes is the school librarian at a 6th-12th grade, public school in New York City. She is the founder of Manga in Libraries, a company which provides readers’ advisory lists and hosts webinars, panels, and workshops. She is also the author of Manga in Libraries: A Guide for Teen Librarians. She received the American Association of School Librarians’ (AASL) Collaborative School Library Award in 2020 and the American Library Association’s (ALA) Scholastic Library Publishing Award in 2022. She was also deemed the “Manga Maven” by Library Journal and was selected as a Library Journal Mover & Shaker in 2022. This session will teach you the foundations of manga so that you are familiar with and confident in your ability to assess the genre. You will also learn how to evaluate manga titles to determine what to add to your collections and how to assess age appropriateness and representation to ensure your manga collections are inclusive.

This session will teach you how to build innovative, social-emotional leaning programs around manga. You will learn new ideas for engaging young people in your library by following their interests and including their voices in program development. Leave with tangible ideas for manga-based programs and book clubs that you can apply in your library right away.

Apply Your Learning: Live, Interactive Working Session
