Building a new or renovated library is a chance to fully embody the library’s values of welcome for all. To truly achieve that goal, it’s important for the building design process to explicitly address who has been excluded or ignored in the past.

Learn how architects and librarians can work together to gather effective community input from everyone, including current non-users, and incorporate it into the design process; rethink outdated assumptions; address new needs that make the library more used and valued; and intentionally craft spaces that are more accessible and give members of systemically marginalized and excluded groups a sense of safety and belonging—not only that they belong in the library, but that the library belongs to them.
