Narrators Samara MacLaren and Nicolette Chin provide competent and well-rounded performances, but Reynolds’s (Shiver) disappointing latest doesn’t allow their narrative talents to shine. A strictly optional purchase.

The denouement of the locked-room mystery, which is a little disappointing, comes out of left field. Libraries may want to order on request, but it isn’t a crucial purchase.

The story alternates between the present and 10 years prior, ratcheting up the suspense and spooling out a cast of intriguing characters drawn together atop a picturesque yet deadly mountain. Reynolds, a former international snowboarder, delivers the thrills in her must-read debut.
