The only child of wealthy Dr. Austin Sloper (Albert Finney), whose wife died in childbirth, painfully shy Catherine (Jennifer Jason Leigh) accepts a marriage proposal from handsome but penniless Morris Townsend (Ben Chaplin), despite the threat of disinheritance from her suspicious father. Based on Henry James's 1880 novel set amidst the upper-crust in mid-19th century New York, Agnieszka Holland's superbly acted and visually dynamic adaptation beats William Wyler's version, The Heiress (1949), with its moving take on money changing everything.
