OrangeReviewStarIn this haunting new adaptation of Wilkie Collins's best-selling 1860 novel, young drawing instructor Walter Hartright (Ben Hardy) is shocked to discover that one of his new pupils (Olivia Vinall) eerily resembles the terror-stricken woman in white he encountered late one night on Hampstead Heath. While The Woman in White has inspired plenty of theatrical and cinematic adaptations (including a musical treatment by Sir Andrew Lloyd Webber and two BBC productions), this latest spellbinding version from Masterpiece Theatre is a serious contender for the best of the bunch. From the nuanced, spot-on performances by Hardy and company to the gorgeously filmed settings to the leisurely unfolding plot richly spiced with intrigue, everything about this program works in harmony to capture the gloriously gothic and deliciously mysterious nature of the source material.
VERDICT Fans of British period dramas that are served up with a generous side dish of danger will gobble up this superbly crafted cinematic jewel.
