This film profiles the work of economist and ecologist David Fleming (1940–2010) as distilled in his book Lean Logic: A Dictionary for the Future and How To Survive It (Chelsea Green). Using quotes from Fleming, interviews with supporters, and location footage, it introduces Fleming's ideas about creating a more livable and sustainable world. To combat what Fleming saw as the inevitable collapse of the current growth-dependent economy, the documentary explains his strategy of transformation through the localization of food production and emergence of self-reliant cooperative communities. Viewers see living examples in Kenya, the town of Totnes in England, and Sterling College in Vermont. The survival of Greece after its 2011 financial collapse is held up as an example of localized revival.
VERDICT An easy introduction to Fleming's cautionary but optimistic assessment of the future. Redefining Prosperity (2017) presents the story of how Nevada City, CA, created its version of a community-based economy.
