The Reckoning

Griffin: St. Martin’s. (Dark Storm, Bk. 3). Nov. 2019. 208p. ISBN 9780312943707. pap. $17.99. FANTASY
The third and final installment of the “Dark Storm” series throws readers into an apocalyptic struggle between good and evil: the epic showdown between Gabriel Redfeather and the evil Titus. Gabriel holds the Nimrod, a trident with wondrous power and an almost Tolkienesque quality: the wielder attains supernatural qualities, yet the weapon can corrupt the beholder. It may be difficult for some readers to keep straight the story’s many characters, including the Valkyrie De Mona Sanchez, spectral Bishop, Goddess Leah, and evil Riel. The landscape is filled with goblins, witches, vampires, elves, and other preternatural beings.
VERDICT The action is intense, fast-paced, ever-present, and bloody in this apocalyptic fantasy, and the characters allude to a wide spectrum of peoples and cultures, ranging from ancient Mesopotamia to medieval times. Fans of the first two books in the series will likely enjoy this closer.
