There are countless books out there that either use pop culture as an entry point to study philosophy or use philosophical concepts to take a deep dive into some facet of pop culture. This is neither. Titan Comics pairs Spider-Man comic book artwork with Spider-Man’s commentary to mixed effect. While there’s some wit and wisdom here, it functions more like a scrapbook highlighting Spidey’s friends and foes, his powers, costume variations, and more. The artwork is pulled from decades of comics, but issue numbers and context aren’t provided. The artists and writers whose work is on display go uncredited, making this art book feel more like a crass cash-in instead of a loving tribute.
VERDICT This garishly eye-catching book is no doubt intended for well-meaning gift givers, but DK’s various Spider-Man books would better serve that purpose.
