With her father missing and presumed dead, Jane Fawkener has returned to London after years in the Middle East. Jane is convinced that her father is still alive and her only clue is hidden inside the pages of the book he left her, The Husband Hunter's Guide to London. Helping her navigate the unfamiliar waters of London society is Edmund Dalby, Viscount Hazelwood, a protocol officer assigned by the government to watch her. Hazelwood is actually part of an elite group of spies tasked with finding out what Jane's father, also a spy, knew about the Russian area where he disappeared. As a former rake working to clear his debts, Hazelwood knows he has to stick to his mission, but he can't help falling for clever, no-nonsense Jane. Particularly enjoyable are the scenes in which fish-out-of-water Jane sees through the folly of her aristocratic peers.
VERDICT This unhurried story by Moore (Blackstone's Bride) features appealing protagonists and a slow-simmering romance. An ideal choice for fans of traditional Regencies who enjoy the occasional dash of mystery.
