b/w. 120+ min. In German w/English subtitles. Music Box Films. 2017. DVD UPC 751778951208. $29.95; Blu-ray UPC 751778951277. $34.95.
A German army deserter (Max Hubacher) puts on a discarded captain's uniform only to allow the authority it confers to go to his head. Claiming to be on a mission from der Führer, he initially assumes control of a band of ragtag soldiers before bluffing his way into commanding a prison camp and executing those accused of his own crime. Based on a real incident, Robert Schwentke's potent drama serves as a microcosm for a nation's blind loyalty to a self-confident "leader" despite misgivings. Blackly comic and fleetingly absurdist, the film offers a dark message. [See Trailers, LJ 11/1/18.]
