The true story of mutiny on the high seas in 1787 benefits from a new perspective taken by scriptwriter Robert Bolt (Lawrence of Arabia) and New Zealand director Roger Donaldson (Smash Palace). Intercutting court testimony by Captain Bligh (Anthony Hopkins) about how he came to lose his ship to Fletcher Christian (Mel Gibson) with flashbacks leading to the event puts the rigid military man in a more nuanced light. Debuting in HD, this "Mutiny" fares well compared with prior versions thanks to its lead performances, lush cinematography, and pulsating score.
