Acorn continues its rerelease of Christie classics with two new sets of the Queen of Crime's greatest hits. Fans who bemoaned the absence of the author's beloved spinster sleuth Miss Marple in the first two volumes will be happy to see both Volume 3 and Volume 4 contain Marple features. However, these are not the acclaimed 1990 versions featuring Joan Hickson (the dernier cri of Marples) but rather performances from both Geraldine McEwan and Julia McKenzie, who took over the role with the reboot of the franchise by PBS in the early 2000s. Both actresses bring their own unique charms to the role, but Christie purists may find the insertion of McEwan into Ordeal by Innocence (despite Marple not appearing in the novel) a bit jarring. In addition to McKenzie playing in The Mirror Crack'd from Side to Side and A Caribbean Mystery (both based on Marple books), the sets include the new reworking of Partners in Crime and The Secret Adversary (featuring David Williams and Jessica Raine as sleuthing couple Tommy and Tuppence Beresford) as well as the David Suchet Poirot films The Hollow, The Mysterious Affair at Styles, and Dead Man's Folly.
VERDICT With across-the-board stellar performances and superb production values, both of these stylish "new" volumes will be a welcome addition to collections of classic British mystery fans as well as public libraries that do not already have them as separate titles.
