Rogers-Whitehead (Digital Citizenship) is the founder of Digital Respons-Ability, an organization that teaches digital citizenship to parents, students, and educators. Here she addresses not only protecting children as they venture online but teaching them to be proactive and protect themselves. She sets out three modes of digital parenting that are based on a child’s age and developing brain: Model (ages 0–8), Manage (ages 8–13), and Monitor (ages 13–18). Each mode helps parents navigate varied platforms, like online gaming and social media, and the challenges and risks inherent to them (including pornography, guarding against predators, and protecting identity while online). Rogers-Whitehead doesn’t neglect the internet’s benefits for children; she discusses internet-enabled activities like starting a business and preparing for college or a career. There’s an appendix with conversation starters and a template for making a family agreement about online safety.
VERDICT This book may help parents gain confidence as they navigate the sometimes-choppy waters of children’s technology use.
