The realm of Aadilor contains a magical city called the Thief Kingdom, where the mysterious Thief King reigns. Larkyra Bassette is the youngest of the Thief King’s three daughters, who uses her voice to heal or cause harm. When the Thief King realizes that a magical drug is being smuggled out of the Thief Kingdom, he sends Larkyra to find out who is trafficking the restricted substance in Lachlan. She pretends to be a prospective bride for the villainous duke of Lachlan but falls for the duke’s stepson Darius Mekenna. Darius has made a plea to the Thief King to help Lachlan’s poverty-stricken people, who suffer under the duke’s rule. However, neither Darius nor Larkyra knows they want the same thing, so their mutual distrust keeps them at odds.
VERDICT Mellow’s (The Animal Under the Fur) exciting premise is rather slow to start, and the romantic heat between Larkyra and Darius is tepid until the very end. Although the teenage heroine gives the book young adult crossover potential, readers will be left uncertain why Larkyra was in the dark as to Darius’s motives.
