Single-Handed: The Complete Collection

6 discs. 582+ min. Colm McCarthy & others, dist. by Acorn TV, acorn.tv. DVD UPC 054961270194. $64.99. SDH subtitles. F
Irish Garda sergeant Jack Driscoll (Owen McDonnell) has returned from Dublin to police his hometown on the rural western coast of Ireland, where his retired policeman father had served. In charge of the station with one somewhat unreliable subordinate plus limited outside support, Driscoll must be self-sufficient. In the six cases presented, he deals with the suspicious death of a young foreign woman, a kidnapping, prostitution, drug smuggling, arson, and sexual abuse. He learns that in a community where everyone seems to know everything about one another, there are still secrets. McDonnell does a fine job of portraying a conflicted Driscoll, always on the edge of either following official procedure or cutting corners like his dad did.
VERDICT Viewers who enjoy mysteries amid piercing desolation, such as Hinterland, will find Single-Handed most satisfying.
