The father and preteen boy in a multigenerational Tokyo clan compensate for a meager household income by shoplifting. After taking in a young girl mistreated by her parents and introducing her to thievery, the pair break into a car to steal a purse—violating their agreed-upon code and culminating in arrest. Writer-director Hirokazu Kore-eda returns to domestic dramedy after a recent venture into genre filmmaking (The Third Murder) in this touchingly observed Palme d'Or-winning and Oscar-nominated exploration of the bonds within a makeshift family.
