Innovative director Lynch, known for acclaimed films such as Blue Velvet and Mulholland Drive as well as the groundbreaking TV series Twin Peaks, has always been ambiguous about the meanings behind his works. This hefty volume, like its subject, is just as offbeat and unconventional but conveys a great deal about the artist's imaginative influences. Chapters alternate between journalist McKenna, who narrates straightforward, traditional biographical details based on interviews with more than one of Lynch's coworkers and family members, and Lynch himself, who comments on the chapter and adds his own reflections. Lynch is easily the more entertaining factor here as he speaks in a conversational tone and rambles a bit as he explores topics such as transcendental meditation or a loaf of bread from Safeway that he loved as a child. His musings are vivid and cinematic as he describes memories such as a tree-lined street in 1940s Idaho and the environments that would later characterize his films. The biography covers all aspects of Lynch's life including his four marriages and forays into painting, music, and photography.
VERDICT Candid and containing a wealth of detail, this work will appeal to Lynch fans as well as readers interested in filmmaking. ["An excellent and unusual portrait of a one-of-a-kind artist. Essential for Lynch's fans but just as valuable to anyone interested in filmmaking, contemporary art, or the creative process in general": LJ 5/1/18 starred review of the Random hc.]
