Rocky Mountain Miracle

Pocket Star. Nov. 2014. 240p. ebk. ISBN 9781476784564. $3.99. PARANORMAL ROMANCE
Dark, brooding, and handsome Cole Steele returns to his family's Wyoming ranch to care for his 14-year-old stepbrother, Jase, after the murder of their callous and controlling father. The locals know Cole has been in prison, and they suspect Jase and he may have had a part in their father's death. On their first trip to town, Cole spots Maia, a traveling veterinarian, and soon needs her assistance when Wally, a bay horse, is seriously injured. A mid-December blizzard keeps Maia at the ranch caring for Wally, and her ability to read animals enables her to learn about the abuse of people and animals on the property. Freak accidents lead Cole to believe that someone is out to harm Jase, Maia, and him.
VERDICT The novella begins with a lot of telling rather than showing, but as Cole and Maia learn to trust each other, their actions reveal two likable characters. Maia's sixth sense with animals, however, may test readers new to paranormal romance. Feehan is a New York Times best-selling author ("Drake Sisters" series, etc.). Rocky Mountain Miracle was originally published in A Christine Feehan Holiday Treasury (2004).
