Modern Masters from Latin America: The Perez Simon Collection

Ediciones El Viso. Mar. 2018. 208p. notes. bibliog. index. ISBN 9788494746666. $45. FINE ARTS
Published to coincide with the Getty Museum-led initiative Pacific Standard Time: LA/LA, an "ambitious exploration of Latin American and Latino art" in dialog with Los Angeles at 70 cultural institutions across Southern California, this detailed exhibition catalog accompanies a show at the San Diego Museum of Art. (PUR) Binding, heavyweight paper, and an oversize format support sumptuous color images. Robust artist biographies cover artists from the late 1800s to the 2010s and a theoretically rigorous bibliography offers the opportunity for deeper engagement. The exhibition was structured diachronically, starting at the bodily and interior level and moving outward to examine the canonical impact of Latinx art production. The incredible scope of Pérez Simón's 99 curated works allowed for a nuanced and substantial discussion informed by geography, social and ethnic diversity, and indigenousness.
VERDICT Will appeal to students and serious collectors. Those interested in dissecting the category of "Latinx artist" will value the complex texts and conversations.
