Marketing with Social Media: A LITA Guide

ALA. (LITA Guide). 2nd ed. ed. Apr. 2020. 176p. ed. by Beth Thomsett-Scott. ISBN 9780838916315. pap. $67. PRO MEDIA
Thomsett-Scott (head of the Engineering Lib., Pennsylvania State Univ.) updates her earlier work on using social media as a library marketing tool. She covered Facebook at length in the original edition, but here she explores newer platforms, including Snapchat, Twitter, Tumblr, and Instagram, and devotes chapters to GIFs, memes, and short-form videos. Each chapter introduces a platform, describes its functionality and best practices, and includes examples and assessment metrics. Thomsett-Scott also offers guidance for creating a social media plan and selecting a system, and provides helpful chapters aimed at archivists and novice social media users. However, topics such as web accessibility and copyright are only briefly mentioned, and the step-by-step instructions, though useful now, will swiftly become dated.
VERDICT A useful primer on newer social media platforms, aimed at beginners. More advanced users should look elsewhere.
