Roberts (Alone on the Ice) here delves into the meaning of "adventure." Part memoir, part critique, this work considers cultural and technological influences that have transformed and, in the author's opinion, often demeaned the adventurous spirit. The author interweaves his past exploration with historical accounts and his present battle with cancer. Though written with stunning language and philosophical interpretations throughout, his poignant personal narratives far surpass his retellings of history. As an audiobook, this title is not completely successful. Narrator David Chandler makes little if any distinction between the author's voice and the voices of those whom he quotes at great length. Without the visual clues that most certainly appear in the written version, listeners may be unclear about who is speaking. The author is honest as he admits his biases, and ultimately he does provide listeners with fresh thoughts and desires to experience discovery.
VERDICT This is a supplemental purchase for libraries with a need for works regarding exploration and adventure. The book will appeal to those listeners already fond of and familiar with exploration. ["[Roberts's] engrossing writing and gripping adventure stories will appeal to outdoors and history enthusiasts": LJ 12/17 review of the Norton hc.]
