Keep Me Close

self-published. (Gods of Hunger, Bk. 2). Aug. 2021. 348p. ISBN 9781736745434. pap. $12.99. PARANORMAL ROMANCE
The second installment (after Drag Me Up) in Virtues’s “Gods of Hunger” series, an inclusive and diverse spin on the Greek pantheon. The city of Khaos Falls is settling after a political shake-up between Zeus and Hades. Aphrodite is ready to get back to business as usual in her pleasure dens until an assassination attempt threatens her carefully constructed world. Her vigilante work ending trafficking rings has apparently ruffled the wrong feathers and brought danger to her door. Forced to work with Hephaestus to catch those who plot against her and the city, Aphrodite must put aside her feelings for the man for the greater good. Working behind the scenes to keep Khaos Falls safe is Hephaestus’s ideal goal, but when Aphrodite’s impetuous actions threaten his hard work he must step out of the shadows to fight this new fight. The more time they spend working to keep her and so many others safe, they realize their goals are similar and that their differences might actually make them a more powerful team. However, someone is not finished trying to destroy Khaos Falls’s newfound stability and Aphrodite and Hephaestus’s budding relationship.
VERDICT Virtues’s paranormal romance might not match the Greek mythology that inspired it, but fans of modern retellings will enjoy the second outing in this sexy, action-packed world.
