What could go wrong on a road trip, when the road-trippers are two former college roommates who no longer get along and now are saddled with a tag-along former daytime talk-show host? Plenty. Samantha Arias and Holly Dunfee, the former roommates, have been sent to pick up a dog, owned by their third friend, Katie, who has recently been diagnosed with a return of cancer. Determined to bring their friend some comfort, they go to pick up Peanut the Great Pyrenees from Kate’s ex-husband, driving cross-country, even though they both would rather be with anyone else but each other. Despite dealing with some heavy topics—cancer, widowhood, and the impending birth of a first child—Garvin’s (I Like You Just Fine When You’re Not Around) book is laugh-out-loud funny.
VERDICT Over the course of the book, readers will discover what caused the rift between Holly and Samantha. However, the most engaging part of the story is how the characters dig themselves out of their ruts in order to give themselves a chance to look toward the future.
