Hold Back the Dawn

Zebra: Kensington. Aug. 2019. 400p. ISBN 9781420147391. pap. $7.99; ebk. ISBN 9781420147414. PARANORMAL ROMANCE
Roan Cabrera’s life outside London in Newberry Township allows him to interact with society in the evenings while balancing his more unusual instincts. It’s manageable, if lonely. While a spin around the dance floor with eligible young women may provide the opportunity to sip some of their blood later, his only real comfort is in visiting the local hospital to help the patients’ transition to death with ease. Among them is Kathryn Winterbourne, who, while escaping her stepfather’s wandering eye, was struck by a carriage. When Roan finds her in the hospital, he is determined to save her life with a few drops of his own blood. Upon waking, Kathryn is sure Roan is there to take advantage of her. But Roan feels he’s finally found someone to love and care for. His plans to win her affection go awry, however, when an old enemy returns, and Kathryn quickly learns that vampires aren’t merely from legends of old.
VERDICT Paranormal romance fans looking for variety will find Ashley’s (When Twilight Falls) vampire novels a good starting point, as this newest title once again sees her characters finding balance between their otherwordly inclinations and human desires.
