Heavy, Vol. 1

Following his death, Bill finds himself a denizen of a vast, purgatory-like city called the Big Wait. Everyone in the Big Wait is assigned a job crucial to the continued existence of the multiverse; Bill’s job is to root out and destroy evil and corruption as a hitman–cop hybrid called a Heavy. He shows aptitude for the work, but the endless succession of ultra-violent encounters wears him down. After being told that taking on and training a partner might expedite his redemption and his reunion with his beloved wife, Bill agrees, only to discover that he’ll be working with the last person he ever wanted to see again—the sociopathic gangster responsible for his murder and the murder of his wife. To Bill’s chagrin, the two actually make a good team and they successfully execute a slew of dictators, despots, and demons, before an encounter with a rogue Heavy raises questions about the nature of their work and casts doubt on whether redemption is actually possible.
VERDICT Bemis (Black Terror: Dark Years) provides a script rich with pathos and epic action, illustrated with jittery dynamism by Donovan (All We Ever Wanted). This volume collects issues 1–5 of the ongoing series.
