Grace Jones (b. 1948) was a pop culture icon in the 1980s. From her singular beauty to her fierce personality, she grew to larger-than-life status among fans. This documentary from Fiennes (The Pervert's Guide to Ideology) incorporates concert footage from Jones's musical performances with scenes of her travels, including visiting family in Jamaica, shooting a video in Paris, and recording her newest studio album. Interestingly, these are no interviews of the star with the filmmaker but rather a camera follows Jones during the day. Troubles such as disagreements with Jones's bassist over payments for the latest recordings help to bring this woman into better focus for fans. Songs performed in their entirety include "Slave to the Rhythm" and "Love Is the Drug." Fiennes employs an intimate and accessible style to bring the viewer into the room with Jones as she navigates her busy life. Extras include commentary by Jones and Fiennes and a moderated Q&A.
VERDICT The documentary will be enjoyed by fans of Jones and the director.
