Follow Me to Ground

Scribner. Jan. 2020. 208p. ISBN 9781982133634. $25. F
DEBUT Ada and Father live near the Ground, where they bury wounded and sick neighbors, or Cures. Interment is temporary, but Cures only reemerge from the Ground when they are more or less healed. To the Cures, these ministrations are miraculous, beyond the capabilities of human beings, and their brief testimonials illuminate how humans perceive Father and Ada, whose existence is bound with the history of the town. Though they physically resemble Cures, Ada and Father are of the Ground, and with its mysterious, quickening powers, Father had created Ada. Yet perhaps there was something in his fashioning that instilled in her a desire for experiences that have never before held an allure for the people of the Ground. When Ada begins seeing a Cure called Samson, Father foresees the imminent betrayals that will cause wounds the Ground cannot heal.
VERDICT In this exhilaratingly original work, lyrical prose gives voice to the strange and alluring Ada, whose spellbinding account alternates with the Cures’ testimonials. Seductive and finally horrific; highly recommended. [See Prepub Alert, 7/15/19.]
